China Adams
Flights of Fancy
May 31 - June 28, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 31, 6 - 9 pm
Steve Turner Contemporary will present its first solo exhibition of conceptual art works by China Adams between May 31 and June 28, 2008. China Adams: Flights of Fancy will feature a new body of work, created in a range of media, including "living sculpture", where the artist uses herself as a subject to examine large universal themes such as death, happiness and love.

Adams makes objects that reflect and record the occurrence of an action. In so doing, she elaborates on a traditionally document-based conceptual art practice by producing objects which function as evidence of her actions. This exhibition will include notarized documents that describe employment positions that the artist proposes to undertake, and meticulously crafted clothing and sculptures made from the accumulation of the detritus of urban life. The notarized documents bear an official signed and sealed declaration of State Authority, and serve as an acknowledgement of the work's existence and an authentication of Adams' authorship. This legitimization is a bit of a ruse as her productivity as an artist is countered by the deliberate suppression of her own personality by role-playing (vampire, cannibal and beauty queen) for the creation of her art. Adams' work reflects the anomie of the digital age.
