Jemima Wyman
Jemima Wyman was born in Sydney in 1977 and currently lives and works in Brisbane. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Queensland University of Technology (2001). In 2005 Wyman received the prestigious Anne and Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship enabling her to enroll at California Institute of the Arts, Valencia where she earned an MFA (2007). Recent exhibitions include Primavera, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 2005; Prime, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, 2005; Catastrophe Theory: Earthquake Girl and Other Stories, Bellas Milani Gallery, Brisbane, 2005; Jemima Wyman: Selected Works, Photo New York, 2004; Open Call, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, 2004; and Minnie Peep, 18th Street Arts Centre, Los Angeles, 2004. Jemima Wyman is a performance artist who also makes installations, videos, photo collages and paintings that are brilliantly patterned visual representations of the body. She frequently uses fabric “skins” to highlight the interface of the inside and outside of the body, between the viewer and viewed and the subject and the object. In so doing, she seeks to critique the conventional representation and commodification of the body.
